Fine Tune Friday tied ’round their throats
Like everyone even remotely involved in the web, I have Big Ideas floating around in my head. Well, with me, the ideas are mostly just seeds, small and possibly already dead. One of these seeds is to find some way–some way–to make it easier to discover music. There’s tons of places out there, from iLike to Pandora that allow you listen to mixes decided by your current taste in music, and there’s tons of music blogs out there as well. But I really think there’s a bigger step that needs to be made. The way music is discovered isn’t changing as fast as the way it’s delivered, and maybe that needs to change. I don’t know what that way is, but there needs to be a way.
Fleet Foxes, “White Winter Hymnal”
download
I found myself on the Fleet Foxes MySpace page after reading Pitchfork’s review of their EP, and I was liking it okay. It was reminded me of My Morning Jacket, but with less guitars, and of Neil Young, but with melodies that took in more than two notes. But “White Winter Hymnal”, which isn’t on the EP stood out from the others. Where the EP seemed to motor along more by concept than execution, the melodies of this song seem truly and deeply inspired. It’s catchy and classic, with an arrangement that manages to be both advanced and happy in its simplicity. Gorgeous.

Also heard this week..
I’ve been perfectly happy sticking with Meredith Bragg and Dodos this week, though a couple of albums fell off the truck: the new Notwist and the new Portishead, neither of which I’ve really had the chance to listen to. Refer to paragraph one about the difficulty of finding new music.
What good stuff have you heard this week? And by “you”, I mean “You”, the person reading this. And by that question mark at the end of that sentence, I mean to ask you (”You”) to tell me what music you (”You”) have been listening to that has appealed to you. You may answer this question by commenting in the comments section.

A blog and nothing but since 2003. Some tech, lots of music, and if rambling was money, drinks are on me.

Heh, the “attn: Doug” is funny - my friend Bethany has been telling me to check them out for a weeks. Okay, okay - I get it! This is really quite me.

Another great pick D________, I can’t wait to hear their full length.
There is still the matter of that $15 bucks you owe me…I’ll beat your ass so bad it’ll make you forget the Coolidge administration.

It really is you, Doug. It’s so you, that I think I heard that they were going to call their debut album Doug. Well, maybe not. But they should.
Christian, I’d imagine that album is going to sound realllll nice on vinyl.
LC: $15 bucks?! I don’t even know her!

Nice — also somewhat Shins-like to my ears (try not to imagine that physically), which is a very good thing.

Good stuff. Certainly MMJ-esque and I like those harmonies.

[...] really surprised by how fantastic this record is. I was a little underwhelmed by the EP, but was overwhelmed by “White Winter Hymnal”. This record shows that the “White Winter Hymnal” was more of an indicator of the [...]
