Fine Tune Friday for you and me
I need to start keeping a playlist of songs to keep as an arsenal to aim at those someones who raise an eyebrow and say “What is ‘indiepop’?” The raised eyebrow adds a “the hell” in between the “what” and “is”. I would play them songs that shoot to catch and hook, with slightly quirky and gritty production, but still with the clear aim to please. Maybe they’re a little precious or slightly restrained, but the best indiepop is never anything but genuine. The songs on the playlist would sound an awful lot like this:
Headlights, “Cherry Tulips”

The “cherry tulips” could be some overworked metaphor for masturbation, or it could just be about liking pretty flowers or a dream that one of them had. That’s the thing about indiepop: you never know for sure. It just all sounds good.
Albums picked up this week (all of which, boringly, were recs from Pitchfork Best New Music) and first impressions:
- Los Campesinos, Hold On Now, Youngster. It’s exhuberant, that’s for sure. But I can’t hear much beyond the spaz just yet.
- El Guincho, Alegranza. Oh, this is good stuff. Not the most focused record, but it scratches my rhythm itch something fierce.
- Beach House, Devotion. I always thought they were too gauzy to really connect with, but the first couple listens of this record have been really enjoyable.
In other very exciting news, an old friend is the new kid on the blog block: Christian’s site is up and running. Go say hello.

A blog and nothing but since 2003. Some tech, lots of music, and if rambling was money, drinks are on me.

Los Campesinos sound like the kind of band I would have loved 7 or 8 years ago, but somehow make me recoil with bile today. Ok, maybe that’s putting it strongly, but they remind me of Bis, a band I want to banish entirely from meomory (and existence)!

Oh…and I dig what I heard from the Beach House record. That one might be a Grimey’s purchase! BTW, is it just me or does the singer’s voice remind you at all of Sinead O’Connnor??

HA! That’s dead on…they really are the new Bis. In all fairness, the first listen actually did suggest that there’s some interesting songwriting going on, but it’s mostly just so fucking hyper that it’s hard to get to that. We’ll see…
