  • Song of The Week: Song of the Week needs a new title

While I’m throwing out my new blog ambitions in a confused a way as possible I thought that…well, see that sentence was so confused that it died of disorganization before it even had a chance to thrive. The sentence community is saddened by it’s tragic premature demise.

But here’s the thing, and the thing is this: one of the practices I preach for blog writing is regular features. Having a constant is an easy way to reduce reliance on inspiration to keep your blog going, and, as ProBlogger pointed out recently, create a sense of anticipation for upcoming stuff.

That, combined with my theory that goes something like “unnecessarily rating and ranking things is necessary for filtering”, is why I’m going to introduce a weekly music feature of my favorite recent-release song of the week. It’s called Song of the Week, but it needs a new title, so I’m looking to you folks for ideas. It needs to be something that makes it clear that this song wears the crown and drinks the milkshakes of all the other songs around it.

The feature starts out with something of a whimper. Not that I don’t like this song, but it’s more of a grower than a gusher. It’s a catchy song, bringing to mind the glossy sincerity of ’90’s acts like James and Travis and any number of other bands that seem to have gotten their band names when their band-naming brainstorm died out and then one of their friends walked in the room. Anyway, this week’s Song of the Week (sigh) is…

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

A couple of notes on the audio:

    • I haven’t yet decided how much I’m going to share mp3s, but those of you who have been around for a while probably know that you can find downloadable mp3s at areseven.com/audio. I’m going to leave it like that for a while, but you loyal readers can let me know if you prefer it some other way. I’m still looking for a free place where I can host and link to mp3s, but they’ll be on the server for now.
    • I’ve been using the flash mp3 player for a while, but with the Wordpress plugin, it’s a dream. Before, I would have to copy a bunch of flash embedding code. No big deal, but now, I only have to type in audio:squirrel_stuffing_woman.mp3 inside some brackets and there it is. Brilliant.

    1. I don’t know what you should call the feature, but I do think this week’s song wears the crown and drinks the milkshakes of all the other songs around it. It’s like some Fleetwood Mac fans listened to too much Arcade Fire and then went in their basement and made a song that turned out fantastic.

    2. Yeah, the more I listen to this record, the more I like it. It’s pretty straightforward, but a really great listen. I was definitely curious about what you’d think of it. Glad it went easy into your ears…

    3. [...] feature is already breaking with a one-time tradition and is crowning two songs instead of last week’s one. This is less because there’s more exciting stuff this week and more because ‘08 is [...]
